"Leaf It" at the City Compost Site

City residents may bring leaves to the City Compost Site. This service is available to city residents only. NO commercial use allowed.

The City Compost Site is available Monday through Friday 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. and on the second Saturday March through December from 8 am - 12 noon. Residents must be pre-registered to use the City Compost Site on Saturday. Pre-registration process needs to be completed only once.

To drop off leaves at the City Compost Site:

  • City residents must bring leaves to the Department of Public Service at 11980 Roachton Road.
  • Proof of residency is verified by driver's license. A copy of your license will be kept on file for future City Compost Site use.
  • The load will be inspected for acceptable materials.
  • Loose leaves must be kept separate from other items such as branches, limbs and stumps because these items go in different composting piles.
  • After the load is approved, the resident will borrow a key to the City Compost Site.
  • The resident will take leaves to the designated leaf area at the City Compost Site and unload.
  • If leaves are in bags, the bags must be emptied. Bags may not be left at the City Compost Site.
  • If leaves are loose in your vehicle, be certain to cover your load with a tarp to prevent leaves from blowing onto the street.

Loose leaves must be kept separate from other wood items because there are two separate areas at the City Compost Site.

  • The leaves are separate from other items so they can rot and become soil amending leaf compost. This is a form of organic fertilizer.
  • The branches, bushes, stumps and limbs are kept separate to be chipped into wood chip mulch. The wood chips are useful in landscaping to prevent weed growth.

We ask your cooperation in keeping leaves separate from other items at the City Compost Site.

Residents may also compost in their back yard. Resources for back yard composting are:www.epa.gov/compost
